Influence of Hawthorne Effect and Dual-tasks on Gait in CP

It is the clinical experience of the authors that some children with cerebral palsy who walk in crouch gait show sufficient knee extension during the clinical gait analysis, but walk in considerable knee flexion when they leave the gait laboratory. Possible differences between walking in a gait lab and walking in daily life may be caused by the effect of observational awareness in the lab (also known as the Hawthorne effect), and the lack of dual-tasks (DT) during the analysis (which are common during daily life walking). Since so far there is no technique to reliably measure gait kinematics in children with CP outside of the laboratory, the researchers aim to objectify the influence of both the Hawthorne effect and dual-tasks by introducing different conditions during a standard clinical 3D gait analysis.

Technical Evaluation of Commercial IMUs Within Clinical Gait Analysis

A standard clinical gait analysis consists of observing walking with video (2D) or advanced equipment (VICON 3D). This 3D method provides detailed information about the gait pattern, but is time-consuming in implementation and data analysis. There are commercial 3D systems on the market that are used in healthy individuals and in sports. These so-called Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) may also be suitable for use in the clinic. In this research protocol, the aim is to test the usability of commercial sensors and technically compare them with standard clinical 3D gait analysis in adult patients with a neurological disorder.

Arm Use With Soft-robotic Glove

This study, aimed at investigating the impact of using a supportive soft-robotic glove on actual arm and hand use in daily life, is designed as a single-case experimental design study. 3-5 patients with limitations in hand function due to trauma-related or neurological conditions are asked to participate. Participants will be asked to use a soft-robotic glove at home for six weeks during daily activities relevant to them, while that glove supports the grip of their most affected hand. For several weeks before, during and after the use of the soft-robotic glove, participants will be asked to do some short tests (wearing an activity meter on both wrists during the day, performing a hand squeeze test under the supervision of the researcher via video call) and to answer some questions related to perceived hand function and well-being (a total of at least 15 times during 12-14 weeks). The present study is a follow-up to previous studies that investigated the effect of (previous versions of) the same robotic glove (Carbonhand; Bioservo Technolo-gies AB, Kista, Sweden) on hand function, in order to better understand and explain the observed therapeutic effect.
